Ghana’s urbanization experience has paralleled dynamic changes in both the national and urban economy. Ghana’s modest economic growth from the 3 percent in 1990 to 7.3 percent 2008 has resulted in rapid urbanization in the same period in Ghana. The urban population has increased from 29 percent in 1970 to 44 percent in 2000 of which 30.7 percent live in Accra and 23 percent live in Kumasi according to the United Nations Human Settlements Program. There is clearly a skewed distribution of the urban growth with Accra and Kumasi accounting for more than a third of the population. .. ...
