GRADUATE PROGRAMMES

  •  MASTER OF ARTS (M.A.) IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT ADMINISTRATION AND ORGANISATION
  • MASTER OF SCIENCE (M.SC.) IN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE, POLICY AND MANAGEMENT
  • MASTER OF SCIENCE (M.SC.) IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
  • MASTER OF SCIENCE (M.SC.) IN LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

General Admission Requirements:

Applicants must have a First Class or Second Class (Upper or Lower Division) honours degree preferably in the Social Sciences from a recognized university or an equivalent approved by the Institute. Applicants with final certificates from any of the following professional bodies; ICA (Ghana), ACCA, CIMA or CIPFA may be considered to pursue the M.Sc. Local Government Financial Management Programme. 

Applicants with Third Class honours degree with a minimum of five (5) years relevant working experience may be considered for admission subject to:

  1. Providing introductory letter from an employer or showing any other proof of relevant employment.
  2. Passing an entrance examination conducted by the Institute.

For purposes of assessing an applicant’s eligibility, he or she may in addition to the above, be required to attend and pass an admissions interview conducted by the Institute.

 

Programme Duration, Sessions and Location:

  • Unless otherwise stated, Master’s Programmes are of Two (2) Academic-Year duration.
  • Programmes may be pursued at any of the Institute’s Campuses in Accra and Tamale.

 

  • Candidates may indicate their preferences for lecture sessions:
    • Day Programme
    • Evening Programme
    • Weekend Programme
    • Modular

  1. Downloaded application forms should be completed and submitted to the Institute together with cash or bankers draft of  GH¢150.00 for  Ghanaian applicants or $100 for international applicants to  the address below not later than Friday, 28th June, 2019 together with:

¶  Certified copies of all relevant Degrees, Diplomas and Certificates

¶  Official  transcripts (original or certified true copy)

¶  Three endorsed recently taken  passport-sized photographs with white background

¶  Two (2) reference reports (one academic and one professional)

Note:

Lectures for all programmes shall commence in August, 2019 and applicants are encouraged to indicate their programme and location choices on top of their completed application forms.

Programme Overview:

These programmes are intended to create a pool of highly skilled human capital to enhance efficiency and effectiveness within the public and private sector.

 

General Admission Requirements:

Applicants should fulfil one of the following academic requirements for admission:

  1. Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations (SSSCE) and West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) Candidates
  2. SSSCE Applicants: Passes (A-D) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including English and Mathematics, plus any three (3) relevant elective subjects.
  3. WASSCE Applicants: Credit Passes (A1-C6) in six (6) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including English language and Mathematics, plus any three (3) relevant elective subjects.
  1. General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level Candidates

Passes in three (3) subjects (at least, one of the passes should be Grade D or better). Also, the applicant must have had credit passes (Grade 6) in five GCE Ordinary Level subjects including English, Mathematics and a Science subject (for non-science students) and an Arts subject for (Science students).

  1. Higher National Diploma (HND) Candidates

Applicant must have graduated with a good HND certificate (i.e. at least 2nd Class Lower Division) and in addition, acquired a 2-year post-HND qualification working experience. Other Diploma qualifications from elsewhere assessed to be equivalent to HND may be considered.

  1. Mature Students’ Entry

The applicant:

  1. Must be at least, 25 years by August 1, 2019.
  2. Should have a minimum of a Senior High School Certificate
  • iii. Provide introductory letter from employer or show any other proof of employment.

Candidates who do not meet the requirements for the Degree programmes are advised to apply for the Diploma programme subject to having the following admission requirements:

  1. SSSCE Applicants: Passes (A-D) in five (5) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including English and Mathematics, plus two (2) relevant elective subjects.
  2. WASSCE Applicants: Credit Passes (A1-C6) in five (5) subjects comprising three (3) core subjects, including English language and Mathematics, plus two (2) relevant elective subjects.
  3. Candidates applying to Diploma programmes shall, in addition to (i) or (ii) above, may be required to pass a competitive Entrance Examination conducted by the Institute and an interview.
  4. Candidates with two passes at GCE 'A' Level with working experience.

Mature Students who have attained the age of 25 years or above at the time of application and have credits in Five (5) GCE ‘O Level subjects or equivalent including English Language and Mathematics, in addition to passing an Entrance Examination and /or Interview.

Community of Practice (CoP) is an important tool for deepening learning and sharing experiences of practitioners in the various disciplines and professions. It helps in building networks, encouraging new learning, fostering problem solving to address new challenges and the creation support systems. 

GIZ and ILGS are collaborating to introduce the concept to complement local government capacity building.
